Sister Smashes £10,000 Target with Epic 78km Marathon Challenge for Brother

Two Capability Scotland supporters running through the streets of Edinburgh for the 2026 marathon

25th May 2026

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the remarkable achievement of Micaela Church, who has smashed her £10,000 fundraising target by completing four events at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival in a single weekend. Running a total of 78km over two days, Micaela’s monumental effort is dedicated to supporting Capability Scotland’s Our Inclusive Community Project (OICP).

Micaela’s challenge took her across the 5km, 10km, half-marathon, and full marathon distances, all in support of the new development that will replace our current residential facility, Upper Springland. Her brother, Matthew, who has lived at Upper Springland for years, relies on the round-the-clock specialist care provided by our dedicated team.

Reflecting on her motivation, Micaela shared: “The team at Upper Springland have taken the time to truly understand Matthew, his needs, his anxieties, and the things that bring him joy. Knowing he is safe and genuinely cared for gives our whole family peace of mind. That’s what I’m running for.”

The new OICP facility is designed to be a state-of-the-art environment, and for Micaela, a key highlight is the inclusion of a specialist hydrotherapy pool. Knowing that swimming is one of Matthew’s greatest joys provided the extra motivation needed to power through every training mile. In a poignant tribute, Micaela ran the course carrying the memory of her mother, who had participated in the same festival decades earlier.

Ailsa Wallace, Head of Fundraising and Communications Manager at Capability Scotland, said, “What Micaela is taking on is extraordinary, both the physical challenge and the dedication behind it. Upper Springland has served people from across Scotland for over 40 years. The OICP will ensure that exceptional care continues in a modern, purpose-built environment that truly reflects those needs, and fundraising like this brings that future one step closer.”

We are deeply moved by Micaela’s commitment and the generosity of everyone who has supported her campaign. Her efforts are a powerful reminder of the impact our community can make when we come together to ensure a brighter, more inclusive future for the people we support.
